I got lucky when swapping rotors and pad on the front Brembo brakes of the STi after <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/index.php\/2019\/09\/20\/sti-brake-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over-torquing the brake caliper<\/a> mounting bolts.\u00a0 However, one of the caliper mounts was almost threadbare.\u00a0 I was able to bolt it back up and get it to torque; but, I wasn&#8217;t confident.\u00a0 Using anti-seize was a short term solution.\u00a0 There had to be a better, permanent fix.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanleyengineeredfastening.com\/brands\/optia\/heli-coil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helicoil<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Time-Sert<\/a>?\u00a0 Many swear by Helicoil; but, for parts that matter, parts that require confidence and torque, Time-Sert with its sleeved design is the better answer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tools Required:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12mm flare nut wrench<\/li>\n<li>12mm socket for banjo bolt (union bolt)<\/li>\n<li>19mm socket for caliper mounting bolts<\/li>\n<li>Rubber stopper for brake line<\/li>\n<li>31\/64 metal drill bit (unless you have metric 12mm)<\/li>\n<li>1\/2&#8243; electric drill<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harborfreight.com\/t-handle-tap-ratchet-wrench-97633.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1\/4&#8243;-1\/2&#8243; tap<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Car jack and stand<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harborfreight.com\/search?q=bench%20vice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bench Vice<\/a> (optional but recommended)<\/li>\n<li>Torque wrench<\/li>\n<li>Safety Glasses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Torque Specifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Union bolt (banjo bolt, brake line to caliper) 19.2 ft-lbs<\/li>\n<li>Caliper to Caliper Mount, 80 ft-lbs (remember, the manual is wrong!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Required Parts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/TIME-SERT-Metric-Kit-Part-1215\/dp\/B001JK44D4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Time-sert Metric kit M12 x 1.5 part# 1215<\/a> (barcode=X0013XGBT3)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=M10x16x1mm+copper+washer&amp;ref=nb_sb_noss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">M10x16x1mm copper washer<\/a> (quantity 2 per caliper, 4 total)<\/li>\n<li>Brake cleaner<\/li>\n<li>Motor oil<\/li>\n<li>WD-40<\/li>\n<li>Permanent loctite<\/li>\n<li>Shop towels, rags, cardboard (brake fluid is messy and can ruin paint jobs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Procedure:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn the front wheels in the opposite direction of the caliper you are going to be working on<\/li>\n<li>Lift front side of car<\/li>\n<li>Remove wheel<\/li>\n<li>Remove brake pads and retention hardware (mark on cardboard which is inboard and outboard, cover and move out of the way to keep clean)<\/li>\n<li>Thoroughly clean caliper with attention to the brake line fitting<\/li>\n<li>Remove banjo bolt and plug brake line with stopper<\/li>\n<li>Remove caliper bolts and remove caliper from assembly<\/li>\n<li>Tape up brake line hole to keep foreign debris from getting in the brake system<\/li>\n<li>Install Time-Serts (more on that in a minute)<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall caliper using new caliper mount bolts<\/li>\n<li>Remove tape<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall brake line using two new copper washers surrounding the brake line fitting (bolt, washer, brake line, washer into caliper)<\/li>\n<li>Torque brake line and caliper bolts<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall brake pads<\/li>\n<li>Bleed brake caliper (watch your reservoir)<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall wheel<\/li>\n<li>Lower car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_433\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-433\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-433\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/TimeSert1215kit.jpg\" alt=\"Time Sert Kit 1215\" width=\"500\" height=\"320\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Time Sert Kit 1215 used to repair an STi Brembo brake caliper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Notes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Installing a Time-Sert is a four step process.\u00a0 You must 1) bore out the hole, 2) counterbore said bored hole, 3) tap the hole with threads and 4) install the Time-Sert sleeve.\u00a0 The kit mentioned above has everything you need plus five Time-Sert sleeves or enough to do this job.\u00a0 As always, there&#8217;s a catch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To bore out the hole, Time-Sert sends you a M12 (12mm) bit; I lubricated each step of the way. The Time-Sert instructions demand the use of 30w oil for the final step and I compiled using 5w-30 motor oil.\u00a0 Also note that I cleaned using brake cleaner and shop towels after every step so that there was no residue.\u00a0 I wanted the Time-Sert insert to be in contact with the caliper in the cleanest way possible.\u00a0 Remember, any lubricant will act like anti-seize compound and it no longer is about torque but squeeze.\u00a0 I wanted torque in this instance.<\/p>\n<p>After boring, time to counterbore.\u00a0 The pic shows using a tap, but I used the drill because the counterbore fits down into the hole and therefore, I wasn&#8217;t worried about the hole diameter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-417 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9815-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"Time-Sert Counterbore\" width=\"413\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9815-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9815-810x1080.jpg 810w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9815-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9815-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9815-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9815-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tapping the hole came next.\u00a0 Using the ratchet tap, I took my time, went slow and again, lubricated with WD-40. I wound the tap till about half was showing below the mount ear and then unwound it back out.\u00a0 It came out really easy.\u00a0 Remember to clean to remove the WD-40 and debris!<\/p>\n<p><img 413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally comes inserting the Time-Sert sleeve.\u00a0 Time-Sert demands oiling the bit before inserting.\u00a0 I first installed the sleeve into the tapped hole about three to four turns after applying a couple of dots of loctite to the outside of the sleeve (not too much).\u00a0 Then, I screwed the oiled bit into the sleeve and kept going.\u00a0 The bit eventually grabs the sleeve and drives it home into the ear.\u00a0 Continue to tap with the bit as the bit is designed to stretch the sleeve into place.\u00a0 Again, I drove the bit about 2\/3 beyond the bottom of the hole and then screwed it back out.\u00a0 The sleeve stayed in place perfectly!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-423 aligncenter\" still makes a mess.\u00a0 So I have cardboard below to soak up the fluid.\u00a0 The excess gets mopped up with some paper shop towels.\u00a0 Wash your hands if you aren&#8217;t wearing protective
