{"id":387,"date":"2020-11-09T23:02:05","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T23:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/?p=387"},"modified":"2021-04-06T12:09:34","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T12:09:34","slug":"cygnus-x-1-for-sti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/index.php\/2020\/11\/09\/cygnus-x-1-for-sti\/","title":{"rendered":"Cygnus X-1\/Fortune Auto 510 Coilovers for STi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"#x1updates\">Jump to Updates<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had purchased the <a href=\"https:\/\/silvers-na.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silver&#8217;s NeoMax coilover<\/a> for my 15+ VAB Subaru STi. They were 8k\/8k spring rates with a bearing upgrade, but something just didn&#8217;t feel right.\u00a0 The dampening was just too soft.\u00a0 No matter the amount of rebound I adjusted, there wasn&#8217;t a distinguishable change.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t feel confident that they would hold up to an event or that they were tangibly better than stock.\u00a0 My goal? Stiffer stocks with a lower ride height.<\/p>\n<p>I ended up talking at length to Geoff, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/cygnusperformance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cygnus Performance<\/a>.\u00a0 He recommended the &#8220;classic&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/cygnusperformance.com\/cart.php?target=category&amp;category_id=1050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">X-1 coilover kit<\/a>.\u00a0 According to him, when the Silvers were tested against benchmarks, it came in dead last with nearly no real dampening.\u00a0 With that and reading some additional marketing, I was set on the digressive valved dampeners.\u00a0 I soon realized after receiving them, that the shocks are more or less <a href=\"https:\/\/shop-fortune-auto.com\/collections\/subaru-510-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fortune Auto 510<\/a>&#8216;s.\u00a0 I received the coilovers in a Fortune Auto box with their directions.\u00a0 This to me was a bonus.\u00a0 Assembled in the U.S.A., tech support, rebuildable and upgradable.\u00a0 What is not to be excited?<\/p>\n<p>I stayed with the 8k\/8k spring rates and went with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hypercoils.com\/coil-over-springs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyperco springs<\/a>, also made in America, after Geoff discussed what different rates would achieve.\u00a0 Changing spring rate looks to be relatively easy.\u00a0 If I find I want a higher spring rate, no problem.\u00a0 Users on the forums have dedicated track STi&#8217;s with 10k+ spring rates in comparison.\u00a0 Note: spring size for this coilover is 60mm ID by 7&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p>After installation, I can already feel a tangible different in dampening with the X-1&#8217;s set to 3 out of 24.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I&#8217;ll post my own review of these coilovers once I&#8217;ve got some miles and an event or two completed.\u00a0 For now, the rest of the article are notes about my install from one set of coilovers to another.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some notes about my install&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Using my <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/index.php\/2020\/02\/19\/coilovers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">install directions<\/a> from earlier, it was easy to remove and reinstall the new coilovers.\u00a0 While I was in the process of the install, I could:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Validate that I indeed had left to right, driver to passenger shock lengths the same<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate and adjust the ride height of the car<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I removed the old coilovers in pairs, fronts first.\u00a0 I realized that the lower assembly measured the same as the new ones: lower bolt hole below the cam bolt hole was 12mm from the bottom.\u00a0 I also re-thought about how to measure the coilovers.<\/p>\n<p>In my initial install, once I had everything set, I found a level place and measured from the ground to the top of the fender well.\u00a0 Once I got the ride height basically where i wanted it, I went for accuracy and measured between the collars on the coilover.\u00a0 Once I measured one side, I duplicated down to the millimeter on the opposite side measuring from the lower lock collar to the spring perch collar.\u00a0 This works well for in car adjustments but I had these out on a workbench, side by side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-396\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9778-600x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9778-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9778-810x1080.jpg 810w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9778-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9778-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9778-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9778-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By measuring from the bottom of the lower mount &#8220;ear&#8221; to the bottom of the top hat (strut mount), I was able to get a good, accurate length.\u00a0 Checking the old set, I was dead on, to the millimeter between left and right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-403\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725-800x792.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725-800x792.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725-1091x1080.jpg 1091w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725-768x760.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725-1536x1520.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725-58x58.jpg 58w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9783-scaled-e1604962323725.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the rears, like the front&#8217;s lower ear, the lower mount was identical in size and build between the NeoMax and the X-1s.\u00a0 In fact, there is a indention or peep hole just above the lower mount bolt that the tape measure can sit in.\u00a0 Again, measuring from there to the bottom of the strut mount gave a consistent reading.\u00a0 The rears were off by 2mm.\u00a0 I was close.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-401\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9784-scaled-e1604962569939-800x342.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9784-scaled-e1604962569939-800x342.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9784-scaled-e1604962569939-1920x821.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9784-scaled-e1604962569939-768x328.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9784-scaled-e1604962569939-1536x656.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wp.dieselhaus.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/img_9784-scaled-e1604962569939-2048x875.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My ride on the NeoMax was low.\u00a0 I felt like the Taiwanese springs were already saggy after 1,000 miles.\u00a0 I wanted to raise my ride height but not too much, maybe a 1\/4&#8243; (6.4mm).\u00a0 The stock ride height also has a rake where the rear is 1cm higher than the front.\u00a0 I lost a little of that as well so, time to make some adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>For the front, I chose to raise by 7mm. So my measurement from ear to strut mount would be 43+7 = 43.7mm.<\/p>\n<p>For the rear, I wanted to increase the rake, so 32.6+9 = 33.5<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"x1updates\"><\/a>UPDATES<\/p>\n<p>20NOV &#8211; Reduced rebound to 6 clicks (full soft=0) front and rear. Autocross at Barber&#8217;s Motorsport Park in the wet.\u00a0 While I was competitive, I discovered that the rebound setting was far too high causing the car oversteer and be a handful.\u00a0 I also discovered that I probably had the car set too low and on the banking the driver side became fully compressed.\u00a0 After talking to Geoff at Cygnus again, 10k springs were recommended.<\/p>\n<p>21APR04 &#8211; 10k springs installed!\u00a0 Initial impressions are that the car rides better with 10k than the 8k.\u00a0 The weight of the car feels better support and the feel is more transitive without being bouncy or harsh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jump to Updates I had purchased the Silver&#8217;s NeoMax coilover for my 15+ VAB Subaru STi.
